Sean Combs Denied Bail, Will Remain in Jail Until Sentencing
A federal court has ruled that music mogul Sean Combs must remain in custody while awaiting sentencing for prostitution-related crimes, despite a proposed $50 million bail package.
Judge Cites Safety Concerns in Bail Denial
U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian rejected Combs’ release request on Monday, emphasizing the rapper’s history of violence as a potential threat to public safety. “Increasing the amount of the bond or devising additional conditions doesn’t change the calculus given the circumstances and heavy burden of proof that Combs bears,” stated Judge Subramanian in his ruling.
Former Girlfriend Supports Release Attempt
Virginia Huynh, a former girlfriend previously identified as “Victim-3” in the government’s case, submitted a letter to the court supporting Combs’ release. She described him as a “family man” committed to personal growth and addressing past misconduct.
“To my knowledge, he has not been violent for many years, and he has been committed to being a father first,” Huynh wrote. “I am writing because I do not view Mr. Combs as a danger to me or to the community.”
Court’s Decision and Legal Context
The ruling follows Combs’ acquittal on sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges, though he was found guilty of Mann Act violations related to prostitution, which carry up to 10 years in prison. The court’s decision highlighted:
- Evidence of assault against two former long-term girlfriends
- Pattern of violent behavior, coercion, and subjugation
- Requirement for “exceptional circumstances” to justify release
Detention Facility Conditions
The judge also addressed concerns about conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center, noting that while public outcry about facility conditions exists, staff have successfully maintained Combs’ safety and addressed his needs, even during a threatened violence incident.
Combs is scheduled for sentencing in October. The court maintains that his continued detention is necessary despite his high-profile status and substantial bail offer.
