Mel Gibson’s ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ Announced as Two-Part Film Series
Lionsgate has announced that Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated biblical epic “The Resurrection of the Christ” will be released as two separate films. Part One is scheduled for theatrical release on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, with Part Two following 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.
A Follow-up to ‘The Passion of the Christ’
The two-part “Resurrection” series continues the story from Gibson’s groundbreaking film “The Passion of the Christ,” which held records as both the highest-grossing R-rated film domestically and the highest-grossing independent film in history until recently. Gibson is collaborating with longtime partner Bruce Davey at Icon Productions to produce this ambitious project.
Production Details and Cast
The original “Passion of the Christ,” which starred Jim Caviezel as Jesus Christ and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalen, was independently produced and financed by Gibson’s production company for approximately $30 million. The film proved to be an extraordinary success, generating:
- $83 million in opening weekend revenue
- $370 million in North American box office earnings
- Over $610 million in global ticket sales
Development of “Resurrection” has been ongoing for nearly a decade, with Gibson indicating his intention to bring back Jim Caviezel in the lead role. Production is expected to commence in late summer, utilizing various European locations.
Industry Response and Expectations
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “For many, many people across the globe, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that will leave moviegoers worldwide breathless.”
Fogelson added that Gibson, whom he considers “one of the greatest directors of our time,” brings both personal connection and masterful filmmaking expertise to this landmark religious project. The partnership between Lionsgate, Gibson, and Davey builds on a professional relationship spanning three decades.
