Neon Acquires Japanese Gaming Thriller ‘Exit 8’ for North American Release

In a significant move for international cinema, Neon has secured the North American distribution rights to Exit 8, an innovative Japanese thriller directed by acclaimed filmmaker Genki Kawamura. The film, adapted from the popular 2023 indie video game, is set for theatrical release in early 2026.

From Gaming Screen to Silver Screen

Based on Kotake Create’s atmospheric indie game, Exit 8 transforms the game’s Japanese subway labyrinth setting into a compelling cinematic experience. The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Kazunari Ninomiya, Yamato Kochi, Naru Asanuma, Kotone Hanase, and Nana Komatsu.

Festival Recognition and Creative Team

Following its midnight section premiere at Cannes, the thriller is scheduled for its North American debut in the Centerpiece section at the Toronto Film Festival. Director Genki Kawamura, who previously won Best Director at San Sebastian for A Hundred Flowers (2022), co-wrote the screenplay with Kentaro Hirase.

Plot Synopsis

The narrative follows a man trapped in an endless, sterile subway passageway searching for the mysterious Exit 8. The protagonist must follow strict rules:

  • Carefully observe all surroundings
  • Return immediately upon discovering any anomaly
  • Continue forward if nothing unusual appears
  • Reach and escape through Exit 8

One minor oversight results in starting the journey again, creating a tension-filled quest for escape from this infinite corridor.

Neon’s Growing International Portfolio

This acquisition joins Neon’s impressive roster of international films, including recent Cannes acquisitions:

  • Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident
  • Oliver Laxe’s Jury Prize-winning Sirât
  • Kleber Mendonça Filho’s The Secret Agent
  • Natalie Portman-produced animated adventure Arco

The distribution deal was negotiated by Sarah Colvin, Neon’s VP of acquisitions, with CAA Media Finance, Goodfellas, TOHO, and Story representing the filmmakers.
