Silent Legacy: Documentary Explores African Choreographer’s Journey Between Two Worlds

A powerful new documentary exploring cultural identity, migration, and colonial legacy is set to make its world premiere at the prestigious Locarno Critics’ Week. Silent Legacy, directed by Jenni Kivistö and Jussi Rastas, follows the compelling story of Sibiry Konate, a contemporary dance choreographer navigating life between Finland and his native Burkina Faso.

A Dance Between Two Cultures

After spending over a decade in Europe, Konate finds himself increasingly disconnected from Western life while yearning to reconnect with his West African roots. The documentary captures his unique perspective as someone straddling two vastly different worlds – working as a mail delivery worker in Finland while pursuing his passion for dance choreography.

Exploring Identity and Expectations

The film delves deep into the complex realities faced by migrants in Europe, particularly examining how colonial history continues to shape modern identities. In his home village, Konate faces an unexpected challenge – being viewed as a wealthy European rather than the artist he identifies as. This perception creates mounting pressure as financial requests from home continue to grow.

A Remarkable Gift

In response to his internal struggle for belonging and external pressures, Konate makes the decision to offer a significant gift to his home village. This act becomes a central thread in the narrative, highlighting themes of responsibility, connection, and cultural preservation.

Production Details and Release

The documentary represents a collaborative international effort, produced by:

  • Väki Films (Finland)
  • Ellis Films (France)
  • Pilumpiku Production (Burkina Faso)

With support from several prestigious organizations including the Finnish Film Foundation and CNC, Silent Legacy is scheduled for release in Finland in spring 2026. The film continues the directors’ tradition of creating socially conscious documentaries, following their acclaimed work on Colombia in My Arms.

Through intimate observations and contemporary storytelling, Silent Legacy offers a unique window into the migrant experience, cultural identity, and the ongoing impact of Europe’s colonial past. The documentary showcases not just Konate’s physical artistry through dance, but his emotional journey between two worlds.
